Housing Support for Returning Citizens
Finding stable housing after incarceration is essential for successful reentry. Fortunately, there are programs and protections that can help formerly incarcerated individuals secure a safe place to live in Philadelphia.
Know Your Rights
- 🛑 No Discrimination: Landlords cannot refuse to rent to you based solely on your criminal history, especially if it's unrelated to your ability to be a good tenant.
- 📜 Background Checks: These must be relevant and fairly considered. Retaliation for asserting housing rights is illegal.
- 🏛️ File a Complaint: If you believe you've been discriminated against, contact the Philadelphia Fair Housing Commission.
Transitional & Supportive Housing
- Project HOME – Offers housing and services for those in recovery or transitioning from incarceration.
- Impact Services – Provides reentry housing, job training, and support in North Philly.
- Horizon House – Focuses on supportive housing for individuals with behavioral health needs, including those returning from prison.
Rent Assistance & Public Housing
- Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA) – Offers affordable housing units and Section 8 vouchers (eligibility may vary).
- RentAssistance.us – Search for local rent and deposit assistance programs by ZIP code.
Tips for Applying
- Be honest about your background, but focus on your stability and future plans.
- Ask potential landlords if they participate in reentry-friendly housing programs.
